Properly acclimating tropical fish to your aquarium ensures they adjust to their new environment without stress or harm. Follow these simple steps for a smooth transition:
1. Float the Bag
- Place the sealed bag containing the fish in your tank for 15-20 minutes.
- This allows the water temperature in the bag to match your tank’s temperature.
2. Gradual Water Mixing
- Open the bag and add a small amount of tank water (about 1/4 cup) every 5 minutes.
- Repeat for 20-30 minutes to help the fish adjust to your tank’s water chemistry.
3. Transfer the Fish
- Use a net to gently transfer the fish from the bag to the tank.
- Avoid pouring bag water into the aquarium to prevent introducing contaminants.
4. Observe Behavior
- Monitor the fish closely for the first few hours. Look for signs of stress or unusual behavior.
Proper acclimation reduces stress and increases the chances of your tropical fish thriving in their new home.
“A little patience during acclimation goes a long way for happy, healthy fish.”
