Guide to Keeping Freshwater Sword Tails

Swordtails are vibrant, hardy, and easy-to-care-for freshwater fish, making them a favorite for beginners and experienced aquarists alike. Here’s how to keep them happy and healthy:

1. Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: Minimum 15-20 gallons for a small group.
  • Water Parameters: pH 7.0-8.3, temperature 72°F-82°F (22°C-28°C).
  • Decor: Provide plants, driftwood, and open swimming space.

2. Feeding

  • Swordtails are omnivores. Feed them a mix of high-quality flakes, pellets, and occasional treats like bloodworms or brine shrimp.

3. Behavior

  • Peaceful and active, they thrive in groups. Keep a ratio of one male to several females to reduce stress.
  • Avoid housing them with fin-nipping species.

4. Breeding

  • Swordtails are livebearers, meaning they give birth to live fry. Use a breeding box or heavily planted areas to protect the fry from being eaten.

5. Maintenance

  • Perform weekly water changes (20-30%) and monitor water quality.

With proper care, swordtails can live up to 5 years, bringing color and energy to your aquarium.

“Swordtails are the perfect combination of beauty and resilience for any freshwater tank.”
